SUMMARY:NSAS Field Trip to Consumnes River Preserve Saturday\, January 17th with Bruce Thomsen & Mark Stephenson
DESCRIPTION:The Cosumnes River Preserve protects one of California’s last remaining undammed rivers and its associated ecosystems: wetlands\, riparian oak forest\, grasslands\, and sloughs. It is home to more than 250 species of birds\, over 40 fish species and more than 230 plant species. We will walk nature trails observing woodland and riparian birds and boardwalks searching for close-up views of waterfowl. Next on the trip we will head over to the Woodbridge Ecological Preserve. This preserve provides California’s largest area of freshwater marsh wintering habitat. Featured here are the majestic sandhill crane\, along with geese\, swans and many other waterbirds. The trip will conclude at the Nature Conservancy’s Staten Island. Staten Island has been a wintering destination for sandhill cranes moving along the Pacific Flyway for more than 40 years. Situated in the heart of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta\, Staten Island’s 9\,200 acres are located between the North and South Forks of the Mokelumne River\, with thousands of acres of crops in production annually\, that provide both foraging and roosting habitat for these beautiful cranes.

SUMMARY:Angwin Christmas Bird Count - Thursday\, January 1st\, 2026 - Join a Team
DESCRIPTION:Start the New Year off with a blast by participating in the Angwin CBC! Birding opportunities are available throughout the count circle including the Napa Valley\, Pope Valley\, Lakes Berryessa\, Hennessey\, and Angwin. We have an excellent crew of experienced area leaders so everyone is encouraged to take part. The count is an important measure of local birdlife\, and has gained added importance as a tool to monitor changes in numbers & distribution of birds in the wildfire burn zone that impacted about forty percent of the count circle in 2020. Our compilation dinner begins at 5:00 p.m. at the Carnegie Building – 1360 Oak Ave. St. Helena\, CA 94574 – situated at the corner of Oak Ave & Adams St.\, where we will share highlights of each count teams’ birding adventures. For details & how to participate: Contact Murray Berner

SUMMARY:NSAS' September Monthly Field Trip to Rio Lindo Adventist Academy Sunday\, Sept. 21st at 6:15 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:Where: 6:15 PM\, Rio Lindo Adventist Academy\, 3200 Rio Lindo Ave.\, Healdsburg\, CA. For those driving separately meet at the gate and either call the office to gain entrance or wait for the group to arrive. \nHistory: Vaux’s Swifts have been roosting in the Rio Lindo Adventist Academy chimney since 1989\, the first year the school’s boiler wasn’t producing steam year-round. The chimney is still used in the winter when the boiler generates heat for the school campus\, but that’s after the fall swift migration has finished. The first small groups of migrating birds usually appear in mid-August. Vaux’s Swifts use the chimney on the campus as a roosting site on their stop-over during fall migration. Numbers vary daily into the thousands\, but begin to peak around September 20. In an average year\, the count peaks between 5\,000 and 10\,000 birds for a few evenings. The highest numbers that have been observed were in 2015 when a couple of evenings the estimate was between 35\,000 and 40\,000 swifts. The Swifts enter the chimney at dusk in a Whirlwind-like Vortex. It has been described as one of the 7 Wonders of the Birding World! For more information visit: Vaux’s Swift Migration – RioLindoAdventistAcademy. \nRide-sharing: Those wishing to carpool meet in Napa in the River Park Shopping Center on Imola Ave.\, Napa\, in front of the Grocery Outlet at 5:00 PM.  Please do not park immediately in front of the store\, rather use the spaces farther away from the entrance doors. \nWhat to Bring: Often visitors bring food (dinner) to enjoy while viewing the swifts.  The campus is a Seventh Day Adventist Academy so no adult beverages or substances (tobacco\, vaping\, etc.) Please respect these restrictions as there will be student\, faculty\, and other visitors present. Bring a chair as we will be viewing for an extended period in one place. Spotting scopes\, binoculars\, cameras\, appropriate clothing.  \nPlease Register for this Field Trip by Clicking on this Link: NSAS Field Trip Registration for Rio Lindo Adventist Academy Swift Migration

SUMMARY:Beginners' Bird Walk – Sunday\, September 15\, 2024 - 9:00 - 12:00 Noon
DESCRIPTION:Are you dipping a toe into birding\, or dusting off a pair of binoculars for the first time in a while? If you want company as you learn about birding\, we’d be delighted to have you join us for our first Beginners Bird Walk of the Fall Season. \nJoin us Sunday\, September 15\, 2024 at the American Canyon Wetlands Edge Park for a fun morning of birding. We will meet in the Parking Lot at 9:00 am.  This park hosts fresh and salt water habitats\, grasslands\, and Eucalyptus groves.  It is a prime area for migrating Shorebirds and Waterfowl.  Green-winged Teal\, Pintails\, Shovelers\, and Gadwalls are frequent ducks that feed in the shallow waters. American Avocets\, Marbled Godwits\, Willets\, Long-billed Curlews\, Dowitchers\, and Least and Western Sandpipers feed on the mudflats. Riparian birds including Western Bluebirds\, House Wrens\, Common Yellow-throats\, frequent the grasslands\, marsh and forest edges\, while Red-shouldered and Red-tailed Hawks soar above. It is not uncommon to see a White-tailed Kite or an Osprey flying by with a fish in its talons. On any given day we hope to see anywhere from 50-80 species during the Fall\, Winter\, and Spring seasons. \nLeaders: Tom Slyker\, Carol Boykin\, and Karina Garcia will be leading this walk. They are citizen science volunteers who participate in the Napa Solano Audubon’s CA Bird Seasons Project at this wetlands location. NSAS has been monitoring birds at this site every Monday morning since 2016. \nWhat to bring:  Warm clothing in layers as it can get windy and cold at this location.  We will be walking ~ 2 miles over paved trails so comfortable walking shoes will be needed.  Bring binoculars if you have them.  If not\, we will have extra binoculars for you to use.  Tom and Carol will have spotting scopes for better views of some of the more distant birds.  Water and snacks are items you should plan to carry with you. \nTo Register and Questions Contact Coordinator Karina Garcia at kg92794@hotmail.com \n
