SUMMARY:NSAS Speaker Series Presents: "Birding from Here to There" with Harry Fuller Thursday\, January 8\, 2026 at 7:00 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:About the Presentation: We will explore what San Francisco’a natural history was like BEFORE the missions and the Gold Rush. Which bird species became known to science because they were found in the Bay Area? Then we will digitally explore the best birding spots along I-5 heading north. Where is there a Lewis’s Woodpecker community near the freeway?  When we get just inside the Oregon border\, we’ll spend some time looking for Great Gray Owls.\nAbout the Presenter: Harry Fuller has lived in Oregon since 2007. Before retirement he managed TV and Internet newsrooms in San Francisco and London. Harry has written four natural history books\, including Birding Harney County; Great Gray Owl in California\, Oregon and Washington; and San Francisco’s Natural History\, Sand Dunes to Streetcars. Oregon State University Press published Edge of Awe in 2019. It is an anthology of essays about Malheur and the Steens. Fuller contributed the chapter on Common Nighthawks at Malheur. He has been leading bird trips and teaching birding classes since the 1990s. Currently he leads trips for the Malheur Field Station\, Salem Audubon Society\, and the Klamath Bird Observatory\, and provides private guiding service. His birding journal is online: ecowise.wordpress.com.\nUse this information to attend the meeting virtually:   \nZoom Information: Napa Solano Audubon is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/84191875619?pwd=XrNNdyCR8ApxTwehgfbWpsJmATg0cb.1 \nMeeting ID: 841 9187 5619 \nPasscode: 704417\n\n—One tap mobile\n+16699009128\,\,84191875619#\,\,\,\,*704417# US (San Jose)\n+16694449171\,\,84191875619#\,\,\,\,*704417# US

SUMMARY:Angwin Christmas Bird Count - Thursday\, January 1st\, 2026 - Join a Team
DESCRIPTION:Start the New Year off with a blast by participating in the Angwin CBC! Birding opportunities are available throughout the count circle including the Napa Valley\, Pope Valley\, Lakes Berryessa\, Hennessey\, and Angwin. We have an excellent crew of experienced area leaders so everyone is encouraged to take part. The count is an important measure of local birdlife\, and has gained added importance as a tool to monitor changes in numbers & distribution of birds in the wildfire burn zone that impacted about forty percent of the count circle in 2020. Our compilation dinner begins at 5:00 p.m. at the Carnegie Building – 1360 Oak Ave. St. Helena\, CA 94574 – situated at the corner of Oak Ave & Adams St.\, where we will share highlights of each count teams’ birding adventures. For details & how to participate: Contact Murray Berner

SUMMARY:Bodega Bay Pelagic Trip with Lucas Stephenson and Captain Rick Powers - Sunday\, November 23rd 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Banner Bodega Pelagic Trips: We have had good luck this season finding 6 Storm-Petrels\, including Leach’s and Tristram’s\, 6 Shearwaters including Manx\, Short-tailed\, and Flesh-footed. Skuas\, Jaegers\, Tufted Puffins\, Fulmars and Sabine’s Gulls have been appearing on most trips. Most recently\, 3 Albatross including multiple Laysan and one Waved! The Waved is the first ABA Record and First Northern Pacific Record. \nGiven this streak of luck\, we thought it would be wise to run a November trip. We’ve reserved a boat with Captain Rick Powers for Sunday\, November 23rd out of Bodega Bay. We’ll be gunning it for the Cordell Bank and the Continental Shelf. Potential November targets are Short-Tailed Albatross\, Parakeet Auklet\, and Mottled Petrel. \nPricing: Captain Rick has asked us to take a maximum of 35 birders so this will require us to increase prices slightly in order to break even. The trip will be co-sponsored by Napa-Solano Audubon and Bodega Bay Sports Fishers and will cost $200. The reduced numbers of birders along the rail should make viewing any ranties easier. \nThis is a late Fall trip which may have rougher seas and fewer pelagic birds.

SUMMARY:NSAS November Speaker Series Presents: A Bird's Rainbow with Bob Lewis - Nov. 13th at 7:00 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:About the Presentation: Many birds are brightly colored\, others use patterned feathers for camouflage. How do these colors originate? What’s the difference between colors from pigments and physical colors? From Yellow Warblers to Anna’s Hummingbirds\, from Snow Geese to Brewer’s Blackbirds\, each species makes unique use of the feather colors it possesses. What do the colors indicate to other birds? And do birds see the same colors we do? Bob will unravel some of the mysteries of color in birds with a little chemistry\, a bit of physics\, and a lot of brightly colored slides. \nAbout the Presenter: Bob trained as a chemist and worked in the energy field for 33 years. He’s taught birding classes in the Bay Area for over 25 years and served as the chair of Golden Gate Audubon’s Adult Education Committee. He’s a frequent speaker on birds at libraries and bird groups. Bob was honored with American Birding Association’s Chandler Robbins Award for Education and Conservation in 2016\, and Golden Gate Audubon’s Paul Covel Education Award in 2010 and 2017. He was one of the founders of the Master Birding Class held at the SF Academy of Science. He loves to travel and photograph birds and has chased birds in over 60 countries. His life list is over 5500 species.

SUMMARY:NSAS' September Monthly Field Trip to Rio Lindo Adventist Academy Sunday\, Sept. 21st at 6:15 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:Where: 6:15 PM\, Rio Lindo Adventist Academy\, 3200 Rio Lindo Ave.\, Healdsburg\, CA. For those driving separately meet at the gate and either call the office to gain entrance or wait for the group to arrive. \nHistory: Vaux’s Swifts have been roosting in the Rio Lindo Adventist Academy chimney since 1989\, the first year the school’s boiler wasn’t producing steam year-round. The chimney is still used in the winter when the boiler generates heat for the school campus\, but that’s after the fall swift migration has finished. The first small groups of migrating birds usually appear in mid-August. Vaux’s Swifts use the chimney on the campus as a roosting site on their stop-over during fall migration. Numbers vary daily into the thousands\, but begin to peak around September 20. In an average year\, the count peaks between 5\,000 and 10\,000 birds for a few evenings. The highest numbers that have been observed were in 2015 when a couple of evenings the estimate was between 35\,000 and 40\,000 swifts. The Swifts enter the chimney at dusk in a Whirlwind-like Vortex. It has been described as one of the 7 Wonders of the Birding World! For more information visit: Vaux’s Swift Migration – RioLindoAdventistAcademy. \nRide-sharing: Those wishing to carpool meet in Napa in the River Park Shopping Center on Imola Ave.\, Napa\, in front of the Grocery Outlet at 5:00 PM.  Please do not park immediately in front of the store\, rather use the spaces farther away from the entrance doors. \nWhat to Bring: Often visitors bring food (dinner) to enjoy while viewing the swifts.  The campus is a Seventh Day Adventist Academy so no adult beverages or substances (tobacco\, vaping\, etc.) Please respect these restrictions as there will be student\, faculty\, and other visitors present. Bring a chair as we will be viewing for an extended period in one place. Spotting scopes\, binoculars\, cameras\, appropriate clothing.  \nPlease Register for this Field Trip by Clicking on this Link: NSAS Field Trip Registration for Rio Lindo Adventist Academy Swift Migration

SUMMARY:The Biggest Week in American Birding - Fall Monthly Speaker Series Returns Thursday\, Sept. 11 at 7:00 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:  \nNapa Solano Audubon’s monthly speaker series returns on Thursday\, September 11\, 7:00 PM\, at the Napa Valley Lutheran Church. We hope that you join us to kick off another season on birding adventures with NSAS. \nThe Biggest Week is one of the largest birding festivals in the U.S. held in early May just East of Toledo on the shores of Lake Erie. This annual Festival draws upwards of 10\,000 birders from around the country. Northern Ohio is considered by some to be the “warbler capital of the world” as thousands of migrating warblers land on the shores of Lake Erie to refuel\, before crossing this great expanse of water and continuing on their journey North. The heart of the festival happens at Black Swamp Bird Observatory’s Magee Marsh Board Walk\, a 2.5 mile path through the shoreline marsh. Magee is unique in that the high water table keeps most trees at shortened heights\, providing more exceptional views of our spring migrants. This\, coupled with the fact that early May is when most trees are just beginning to bud\, before leaves make viewing more challenging\, is why the Biggest Week is so exciting. During this year’s 9-day festival at the Boardwalk\, along with a number of local area hotspots\, birders observed 243 species including 36 North American Warblers. \nAbout the Presenter: \nMark has been the President of our Chapter\, Napa-Solano Audubon\, for the past 5 years. He began birding in the 4th grade and his birding knowledge expanded dramatically when his family moved to Ithaca\, NY where he birded regularly with his mentor\, Dr. Arthur Allen\, founder of Cornell’s Laboratory of Ornithology and other leading experts from the Lab. During college he worked summers at Sapsucker Wood’s and for the Massachusetts Audubon Society before heading west and directing Environmental Education Programs at Foresta Institute in Washoe Valley\, Nevada. After a career of more than 30 years in public education in Benicia and Napa Valley schools\, he is enjoying retirement. When Mark’s son\, Lucas\, caught the “Birding Bug\,” Mark turned from his passion for portrait and landscape photography to focus on birds. With Lucas\, he has traveled to every corner of California\, Arizona\, Texas\, Ohio\, Florida\, and Costa Rica observing and photographing birds. This Spring\, after previously attending the Biggest Week 8 years ago with Lucas\, Mark returned to the festival with his brother Tom and our very own Tom Slyker and took hundreds of photos of Ohio’s migrants and resident birds. He is excited to share his experiences with our community and his friends from Napa-Solano Audubon.

SUMMARY:NSAS Speaker Series: Exploring Florida Birds with Mark Stephenson - Thursday\, April 10th 7:00 p.m. - Benicia Public Library
DESCRIPTION:About the presentation:\nMark hasn’t been birding back in Florida since he was a teenager in the 60’s wading through swamps in search of Limpkins\, Wood Storks and Flamingos with his brother Tom. His family used to drive down from Ithaca\, NY in their Rambler station wagon every couple of years on a vacation to visit his grandparents who lived in Brooksville\, North of Tampa. During those years they convinced their parents to take them on birding excursions to visit the Everglades\, Pine Island\, Sanibel Island’s Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge and as far South as they could travel down into the Keys. Those were the good old days with plenty of Herons and Egrets to go around. During the last 2 years he has returned to bird Florida in April 2024 on the Atlantic side from Orlando to the tip of the Keys. He traveled there again over New Years 2025 on the Gulf side in the vicinity of Fort Myers. He visited a number of new exciting birding locations and photographed some of Florida’s most exciting birds! His presentation will take a look at some of the best birding locations that Florida has to offer as well as close-up looks at Florida’s many Herons\, Gulls\, Terns\, Shorebirds\, Raptors\, Woodpeckers\, Warblers and other impressive Passerines. \nAbout the Presenter:\nMark has been the President of Napa-Solano Audubon for the past 5 years. He began birding in the 4th grade and his birding knowledge expanded dramatically when his family moved to Ithaca\, NY where he birded regularly with Dr. Arthur Allen\, founder of Cornell’s Laboratory of Ornithology and other leading experts from the Lab. During college he worked summers at Sapsucker Wood’s and for the Massachusetts Audubon Society before heading west and directing Environmental Education Summer Camps\, Expedition and Education Programs at Foresta Institute. After a career of more than 30 years in public education in Benicia and Napa Schools\, he is enjoying retirement and Northern California birding. Mark turned from his passion for portrait and landscape photography to focus on birds. With his son Lucas\, he has traveled to every corner of California\, Arizona\, Texas\, Ohio\, Florida\, and Costa Rica searching for birds and taking their photos.
