SUMMARY:Beginners' Bird Walk - Wetlands Edge Park - Sunday\, March 8th at 9:00 a.m.
DESCRIPTION:NSAS Beginners Bird Walk on Sunday\, March 8th at 9:00 a.m.\n\nRecently the weather has been cooperating with sunny days\, and our Beginners walks have been excellent outings.\nWe’d be delighted to have you join us for our next Beginners’ Bird Walk on Sunday\, March 8th\, at the American Canyon Wetlands Edge Park.  No reservations are necessary\, just plan to show up and enjoy being outdoors for a while. It’s a great time to be birding at the wetlands as the location offers an opportunity to observe a wide variety of wintering birds.  What you’ll see are ducks\, shorebirds\, songbirds\, and raptors.  You’ll see both migrant species that call the local wetlands their winter home and our resident birds that live in the area year-round.\nThe walk is open to birders of all levels and ages.  Napa Solano Audubon membership is encouraged but not required.  It’s free\, it’s fun\, and loaner binoculars are on hand if you need them.  If you have questions about this outing\, please e-mail Tom Slyker at solanobirder@gmail.com.\n\nMeeting time and location:  We will meet at 9 AM on Sunday\, March 8th\, at the parking lot for the Wetlands Edge Park\, which is located at 2 Eucalyptus Drive in American Canyon.  We expect that the walk will take between 2 – 3 hours and we should be finished by noon.\n\nDirections: From Vallejo\, take Hwy 29 north towards Napa.  Turn left off of Hwy 29 onto Rio Del Mar.  There is a stop light at this location.  Immediately after turning onto Rio Del Mar\, turn right onto Eucalyptus Drive.  Continue west on Eucalyptus until you reach the parking lot.  From Napa\, drive south on Highway 29 till you reach Rio Del Mar.  Turn right onto Rio Del Mar and immediately turn right onto Eucalyptus Drive.  Continue west on Eucalyptus until you reach the parking lot.  From eastern Solano County take Hwy 80 to American Canyon Road.  Go west on American Canyon Road until it ends at Wetlands Edge Road.  Turn right on Wetlands Road and go north until you hit Eucalyptus Road.  Turn left on Eucalyptus Road and you will be at the Wetlands Edge Park parking lot.\n\nLeaders: Tom Slyker and Carol Boykin will be leading this walk.  Both are citizen science volunteers who participate in the Napa Solano Audubon’s CA Birdseasons project at the wetlands location.  NSAS has been monitoring birds at this site on a weekly basis since 2016.  This monitoring has provided the participants with a wealth of knowledge about the birds you might see.\n\nWhat to bring: Warm clothing in layers as it can get windy and cold at this location.  We will be walking ~ 2 miles over paved trails so comfortable walking shoes will be needed.  Bring binoculars if you have them.  If not\, we will have extra binoculars for you to use.  Tom and Carol will have spotting scopes for better views of some of the more distant birds.  Water and snacks are items you should plan to carry with you.

SUMMARY:Galápagos Birds and the Study of Evolution with Dr Jaime Chaves 3-12-26
DESCRIPTION:Greetings AlI NSAS Members\, Family & Friends: \nYou don’t want to miss next Thursday’s presentation by Dr. Jaime Chaves entitled\, Birds and the Study of Evolution! Dr. Chavez is an Associate Professor of Evolutionary Biology from San Francisco State. \nPlease Come Join us next Thursday for our March Speaker Series\nDate: Thursday\, March 12\, 2026 at 7:00 p.m.\nLocation: Napa Valley Lutheran Church \nOur Speaker Series is in-person and via zoom for those viewing from afar\, or unable to travel in the evening (See Zoom connection details below.) \nAbout the Program: Galápagos Birds and the Study of Evolution \nDr. Chaves’s research centers on understanding how biodiversity is generated and maintained in the Neotropics\, with a particular emphasis on the connection between molecular variation and phenotypic traits. He has applied phylogenetic comparative methods and integrated data from fieldwork and museum collections to investigate evolutionary histories of organisms\, addressing fundamental questions in biodiversity. By combining molecular genetics with field biology\, his presentation will explore evolutionary processes at multiple levels: from population divergence and speciation in action\, to species-level phylogeography and systematics. Dr. Chaves’s projects are grounded in international\, multidisciplinary collaborations that actively engage local students and communities. While he employs molecular techniques across a variety of taxa\, he is especially drawn to birds for their remarkable diversity and life histories. The majority of his work focuses on species on the Galápagos Islands. \nAbout the Presenter: Dr Jaime Chaves is an Associate Professor of Evolutionary Biology at San Francisco State University whose work is rooted in a fascination with how life diversifies and adapts. His research integrates genomics and field ecology to study adaptation and diversification in birds\, with a particular focus on Galápagos species\, including Darwin’s finches. His primary research goal is to better understand evolutionary processes and inform conservation. Jaime is an active birdwatcher who participates in community building through nature-focused activities (Christmas Bird Count\, Big Days) and through his involvement with the California Academy of Sciences. \nZoom Link:\nNapa Solano Audubon is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/84471416566?pwd=5ONK5AGZ089RtaUslia4XDB7gy0pkL.1\nMeeting ID: 844 7141 6566\nPasscode: 195584 \nOne tap mobile\n+16694449171\,\,84471416566#\,\,\,\,*195584# US\n+16699009128\,\,84471416566#\,\,\,\,*195584# US (San Jose) \nZoom Tips: If you click on the link and are not able to join the Zoom Meeting\, first try copying and pasting the entire link into your web browser and then hit the return key. DESCRIPTION:Mine’s Road stretches 35 miles from Livermore to San Jose! We meet at the junction of Tesla and Mines Roads at 8 a.m. with a full tank of gas\, money for entrance fees\, lunch and plenty of liquids. The majority of this trip is not a hiking trip\, but a true road trip. Participants should try to carpool\, as much as possible as there are very few pull outs for a long caravan. We will be using Jean Richmond’s book “Birding in Northern California” as our guide. As we head down the beginning of Mines Road in arroyos at the lower elevations we hope to observe Acorn and Lewis’s Woodpeckers\, Phainopeplas\, Yellow-billed Magpies and Lark Sparrows. At Del Valle Regional Park we will stop at the reservoir that hosts a variety ducks and waterbirds and look for Green Herons\, Wood Ducks\, Greater Yellowlegs\, Great Horned Owls\, and a variety of Warbler species. Along the road at higher elevations in the extensive chaparral zone we have a chance to see a variety of exciting birds including Lawrence’s Goldfinch\, California Thrashers\, Rufous-crowned and Bell’s Sparrows and there is even the possibility of a sighting a Roadrunner! At the junction of Mines and Del Puerto Canyon Road we will head East with a stop at Frank Raines County Park. There we will visit a riparian woodland that has a host of resident birds and we should also be treated to a number of early migrants as well. The trip will end at HWY 5\, where we turn north and head back home which will complete our 75 mile journey. \nFor more Information Look for the Mines Road Field Trip eBlast in your email (be sure to check your spam folder if you don’t find the eBlast).
